How we calculate
- Event length = end time minus start time, in minutes.
- Full shifts = event length ÷ shift length, rounded down.
- Leftover time becomes a shorter last shift if it's at least half a shift. If it's less, it's added to the last shift instead. You can pick either one yourself.
- Volunteer spots = shifts × the volunteers per shift for every role, added up.
- People to recruit = volunteer spots ÷ shifts each volunteer takes, rounded up.
- Volunteer hours = each shift's length × the volunteers in it, added up.

FAQ
How do I figure out how many volunteers I need?
Multiply the number of shifts by the volunteers each shift needs, across every role. A 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM event with 2-hour shifts has 3 shifts. With 2 greeters and 3 setup helpers per shift, that is 15 volunteer spots.
What if my event doesn't divide evenly into shifts?
If the leftover time is at least half a shift, it becomes a shorter last shift. If it's less, the last shift runs longer instead. A 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM event with 2-hour shifts gets a 1-hour last shift.
Does SignUpSpark split my event into shifts for me?

Can one volunteer take more than one shift?
Yes. Set Shifts each volunteer takes to 2 or more. The calculator divides the volunteer spots by that number and rounds up to tell you how many people to recruit.
Do volunteers need an account to sign up?
No. Volunteers sign up with a name and email. Reminders go out 24 hours and 1 hour before the event date on every plan, including Free. A Free sheet holds 100 signups per event, and more spots need Pro at $99 a year or $12 a month.
